3-Day Trekking the Roof of Africa in Simien Mountain NP

Your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel or airport in Gondar. After a short briefing, you'll begin a 3-hour drive north to Debark, the gateway town to Simien Mountains National Park. From Debark, you'll continue driving into the park to Buyit Ras (3,200 meters). You'll enjoy your first panoramic views of the dramatic cliffs, gorges, and jagged peaks that define the Simien landscape. After a picnic lunch, you'll take a short acclimatization hike along the ridge. On this trek, you'll spot the famous Gelada baboons, endemic to Ethiopia and often found in large groups grazing on grass. Watch them chatter, groom, and sit on cliff edges - with little fear of humans. You might also spot klipspringers, raptors, and thick-billed ravens. You'll arrive at Sankaber campsite (or lodge, if booked) by late afternoon. You'll enjoy tea, dinner, and a warm fire under the stars. Overnight: Sankaber camping.

After about two hours of hiking through open meadows and highland shrubs, you will reach the Jinbar Waterfall, one of the highest in Ethiopia. The viewpoint here is spectacular; the waterfall plunges into a massive gorge, surrounded by mist and cliffs. You'll enjoy a snack break, take photos, and watch lammergeiers (bearded vultures) soar overhead. You will reach Geech Camp (~3,600 meters) in the early afternoon. After a hot lunch prepared by your cook or lodge staff, you can rest or explore the surrounding area. You'll watch the sunset over the highlands, golden light spilling across cliffs and valleys. After dinner, you'll enjoy stargazing in the clear mountain air. The lack of light pollution offers exceptional views of the Milky Way and constellations. Overnight: Geech Camp in a tent.

You'll begin your return trek via a slightly different route to Sankaber (or an arranged pickup point). Along the way, look for: Walia ibex, Ethiopia's endangered mountain goat, and More Geladas and highland birds, and local flora such as giant lobelia and evergreens. You'll reach the park exit or pickup point by early afternoon. You'll drive back to Debark for lunch and rest. You'll drive in Gondar by 5:00 PM, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or airport for onward travel. End of tour.
